Loku Paalama Bridge, Sri Lanka

22 students representing “Engineers Without Borders” at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have spent their summer holidays in Sri Lanka building a suspension bridge.

The bridge allows villagers to cross the Bentara River, which was impassable at high tide. The new crossing has given a new lease of life to local villagers, children can go to school and farmers can transport their crops over the river. Funding of ¤ 75,000 had to be raised by the students in order to make the project viable.

Simple construction techniques had to be devised to build the bridge as no heavy plant equipment would be available for the students. Spanning 30m with a width of 1.7m, the bridge has been constructed from galvanized steel components that were shipped to Sri Lanka as modular sections.
