Via 57 West offers uninterrupted views across the Hudson (Click the image to expand)
VIA 57 West is the first residential building project completed in Manhattan, New York, by Danish architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). The 142 m-high building offers affordable housing, with 750 apartments that together make what resembles a shifted pyramid with a steeply rising façade.
A large angular void was carved from the centre of the building to form a 22,000 m2 courtyard at its base. It’s a combination of a skyscraper and a courtyard building,” says Bjake Ingels, “one side is the height of a handrail and the other side is the height of a high-rise.” The courtyard has created a new green space for Manhattan.

The exterior steel structure has been protected against corrosion by hot dip galvanizing
With its angular balconies around the leafy inner courtyard, the block connects the Hudson River to the Hudson River Park and offers spectacular views while muffling the local traffic noise. The exterior steel structure and the metal facade of the building has been protected against corrosion by hot dip galvanizing.
