The New Portland Arms

Skilful remodelling, careful material selection and a meticulous approach to detailing has enabled the successful conversion of an old public house into an adaptable mixed-use development. This combination was recognised by the project winning the GAGA 2018 Detail award.

The complex build involved retaining and restoring the façade of the existing public house, which is located on Wandsworth Road within a local Conservation Area. Additionally, commercial and residential space was created by developing the rear and side of the site.

The rear elevation was opened up with a series of cascades from behind the parapet of the old public house that formed a series of setbacks and balconies into a communal landscaped courtyard at street level. Views over Battersea and the Battersea Power Station can be enjoyed from multiple levels and viewpoints from both the balconies and generous glass openings.

Galvanised steel has been used as part of the design of the building to anchor the untreated Siberian Larch and Normandy Grey brickwork. It also expresses the structure of the cantilevered balconies and helps to mark the floor plate.

The Siberian Larch balustrades were given a protective galvanized capping detail as well as the entrance gates, reinforcing the structure and protecting from rain. This was also continued over the single skin brickwork balustrades.
