Issue#03—2018

It’s daunting to think that we are already three quarters of the way through 2018. A very busy year was compounded by a surprise invitation to take part in a prominent exhibition.

An interesting theme of attendee queries and concerns was that of trying to achieve the right balance for steel detailing advice that can easily be provided throughout the specification chain and how to ensure that this is followed through to erection on site. A whole host of design software packages are available but the lack of attention to detail can make the best of these redundant.

A very simple example provided to one attendee – the correct placement of drainage holes for hot dip galvanizing of steel sections, that could contribute to time savings within the process and delivery to site – had not been previously considered in this way!

In our second instalment of the 2018 GAGA winners, engineering winner Middleton of Rora, took design and detailing as one of its core parameters which contributed to the project being delivered on time and budget. Blue Mountain School, highly commended, also highlights what can be achieved by effective communication between designer, fabricator and galvanizer.

Maybe a little ‘nudge’ now and again may result in a larger gain for us all.
