GAGA 2018 Construction Awards

GAGA 2018 ceremony

Longevity, beautiful design and a deep running concern for sustainability were the dominant themes of the 2018 GAGAs. The UK’s awards to celebrate and reward the most forward looking and exploratory applications of galvanizing in design, art and construction took place on 8th June at the gracious Edwardian surroundings of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Tim Pettigrew and Michael Connolly from Reddy Architecture + Urbanism provided an introductory presentation on understanding the limitations of design and manufacturing.

2018 Architecture Award Winner

Old Shed New House by Tonkin Liu won the architecture award, a standout project for this year. An existing agricultural shed in Yorkshire – once a container for tools and tractors – is now a container for a lifetime collection of books and art. The project uses the reflective and intriguing qualities of galvanized steel in a creative way. Newly clad in varied widths of shot-blasted timber and galvanised steel fins, the rhythmic facade reads like the bark of the silver birch that characterise the site. Duplex Award Winner

Newground Architects’ Rehearsal Rooms was awarded the award for duplex systems.

The longevity of metalwork, which plays a key part in the elevations, was achieved by galvanizing and then powder coating. Detailed treatment of the steel railings complements the form of the concrete balconies.
